Tom’s European Tour Is Now Over; A Brief Word And A Brief Video From Malta; Just Added Exclusively! Full Review From Malta
Monday, November 16th, 2009Here’s the first, brief video and caption of Tom’s Sunday night show in Malta and an exclusive first posting anywhere of the full-length professional review from the show. Also, for (most probably) the last time, the LiveNation promo photo that, one might say, we all from TJI had a lot to do with being used instead of the other, original picture they were going to use. Now, it’s hopefully into the studio for more new product. This man is amazing, isn’t he?
The Times of Malta posted a brief video after Tom’s show there and wrote, “Described by some as a legend among legends, superstar Tom Jones is this evening pleasing the mixed age crowd which has filled the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre at Ta’ Qali.
“Renowned for a stream of classic chart-toppers like Sex Bomb and It’s Not Unusual, the veteran crooner opened the night with Sugar Daddy from his latest album 24 Hours.
“The concert was organised by NNG Promotions.”

Below is a review of Tom’s Malta show written by journalist Justin Camilleri. He says, in response to my question about how many people were there, that there were “over 10,000 not to mention the standing concert revellers.” TJI thanks Justin for sharing this with us
The real spectacle that’s Tom Jones
As the crowd waited eagerly the concert kicked off with opening guitar riffs from Sugar Daddy, while the lights fired up from the stage out of nowhere the man himself appeared dressed in a cool black suit that fitted him like a glove, as he belted out those Bono penned lyrics from his latest album 24 hours we knew we were in for a real show.
Indeed those verses sum up Jones’ real-life virile persona that shows no signs of waning even after four decades as the roaring tiger has now morphed into an immortal Welsh dragon sprouting fire on stage. Despite showing his grey mane, Tom certainly does not look his age as he moves and exhumes the energy of a 40-year-old, more so in Give A Little Love.

The women on the front row certainly gave more than a little love as Tom received squeals of delights. Not even half-way through the show and women of all ages were already enthralled just by watching him move.
Just as Jones’ If He Should Ever Leave You bolstered the party mood with that magnificent voice that has not aged, we were immersed in a feast of top notch Vegas-style musicianship that was simply eye candy for the masses.
Classiness came to the fore with Thunderball. As Tom’s macho high – octave notes propelled those Bond-ish lyrics which clearly he was born to perform; the audience cheered at that heartfelt thunder strike of drums and bass accompaniment. The song’s verse ‘the winner who takes all’ rings true as this was a reminder as to how in recent times they don’t write Bond themes like they used to.
The international legend managed to whisk us back in time with the 1960s timeless classics of the likes of Delilah; She’s a Lady, What’s New Pussycat? and It’s Not Unusual, but what gave the crowd the goose bumps is the timeless Green, Green Grass Of Home, my personal favourite, indeed a priceless piece of National Welsh treasure, no wonder Elvis the King was mesmerised by this song, the first time he heard it. Members of the audience swayed their hands religiously and I thought to myself, if people from all walks of life are not touched by the beautiful refrain, then there is clearly something wrong with them.
Despite the drab Sex Bomb Radio Mix version being sacrilegious as I personally prefer the original version, the crowd pleasing You Can Leave Your Hat On more than compensated. All the seated concert revellers got up and danced to Tom Jones’ rousing performance that clearly gives Joe Cocker a run for his money. Last but not least, the amusing sounds of the trumpet section that dwarfed the whole arena, which is a quaint reminder why we love, live music entertainment in the first place.
The absolute highlight had to be Kiss as Tom roared the ‘Women and Girls rule my world’ line the atmosphere in the Arena was truly electric. As he cast his very own X-Factor spell on stage this was further confirmation as to how this singer at nearly 70, is still a sex symbol for women of all ages and a born entertainer who delights whole heartedly in giving his audience a rocking show with attitude.

It was great seeing Tom Jones in Malta. I met him at the arrivals lounge of the Malta International Airport and got the chance to have a pic with him. I was so proud and happy when I asked him for a pic: ‘Sure!’ he said, in his well known Voice. Even now, almost a week later with this pic in my hands, I couldn’t believe I had a chance to meet a legend such as Sir Tom! The concert was great and I felt shivers going down my spine several times during the evening, experiencing live songs I heard many times during my life! Thanks Tom, hope we’ll see you in Malta again.
