A Half-Hour Interview To Promote “Praise and Blame” in 2010

Tonight I am covering a very special event – a gala to benefit the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas and the Muhammad Ali Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Ali is being honored on his 70th birthday by this very worthy charity. In attendance to perform or pay tribute to The Champ will be Stevie Wonder, Samuel L. Jackson, David Beckham, Larry King, Ken Jeong, Snoop Dogg, LL Cool J, Common, Lenny Kravitz, Sean Combs, Anthony Hopkins, John Legend, Chris Cornell, Cee Lo Green, Joe Perry, Slash, Terrence Howard, David Copperfield, Siegfried & Roy, Andre Agassi, Stefanie Graf, Jim Brown, Randy Couture, Brad Garrett, Kelly Rowland, Dave Koz, Robin Leach, James Gandolfini, Steve Schirripa, Chazz Palminteri, and Sammy Hagar. From the world of boxing will be Sugar Ray Leonard, Evander Holyfield, Ken Norton, Earnie Shavers, Leon Spinks, Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini and Tommy “Hitman” Hearns. It promises to be so exciting and I know – and I have never before presumed to say what I think Sir Tom would like – but I am positive he would love to be there. Don’t you agree?

Relatively few people (260 in all) have seen this, so I thought I’d post it:

In 2010, after Praise and Blame was released, Tom did a number of promotional appearances.

Here is a 30-minute interview Tom did with Tim Leinhard, host of a German-French culture show on television. Most of the questions and answers are familiar to long-time fans – stuff about Elvis, preventing dehydration (something Tom knows well from all those times in Las Vegas) and a questions about the “best time of the day” for Tom. Can you guess what is answer was? Bet you can.

He also touches on why recordings are necessary and what the “real thrill” is in his work. We also hear again about how Tom prays and what he prays for and where God is found.

For the record, once again, the first time Tom came out with his hair “au natural” was in January, 2009. The photos on TJI were carried in publications around the world. It was – remember? – big news.

What a lovely interview,Tom always comes over so matter of fact and down to earth, and although i’v heard him say the same things in other interviews i really enjoyed it.(It perked me up Ellen)!

Tom is a big boxing fan so I’m sure he would have loved to be at an event honnouring Ali. In fact he once had a ‘fight’ with Ali I’ll try and find the photo and send it to you Ellen so you can post it if you want.

  3. LoriW. Says:

Enjoyed the video. thanks for posting.

  4. Pat Lowndes Says:

It is a good interview with some different questions .

  5. Moderator Says:

Thanks, Norman, but I have the photo and actually thought of posting it. Maybe I will later as today is quieter than yesterday.

I agree that Tom would love to be at the event to honor Ali. Tom is a big boxing fan (and so am I), and he used to box when he was young at boys clubs. I’ve also heard Tom mention that he thinks Ali is the greatest boxer and athlete that has ever lived.

Norman: one slight correction. I am familiar with the photo of Tom in the ring with Ali and I’ve heard him tell the story. He never fought Ali. It was meant as a light sparring session, and Ali pretended to be knocked down by Tom for a publicity photo.

Thanks Ellen. I’d never seen this interview before and really enjoyed it. I don’t think I’ve heard him speak so much about his faith or caring about those at war. Seemed very heartfelt. Hope his voice will last forever.

I personally believe Sir Tom is the “VOICE” no matter what others say today. No disrespect but no one should use the term to refer to anyone else in the music industry.

  8. Joanne Says:

What a terrific interview! While I’ve heard many of these questions answered in other interviews, I can’t recall ever hearing Tom speak at such length about his feelings on spirituality and religion, of his thoughts on where the soul goes after death, or his concerns about war and world peace. Can’t remember the last time I enjoyed listening to an interview more! Thank you SO much for posting this, Ellen….it made my day!

  9. Kathy s Says:

Great posting Ellen, I always enjoy Tom speaking on things other than his music although it’s all connected.
You bring us wonderful things. Hope you have a great nite.

Thanks, Kathy. Positive feedback always appreciated.

Hi Stewart – I know Tom and Ali didn’t really fight, thats why I said ‘fight’……now about that singing competition they had!! (lol)

  12. Joanne Says:

Ellen….I was thinking the same thing. LOL! Not saying he’s not telling the truth, but perhaps embellishing the story a little?!? (We all know what a great storyteller Tom is!). I don’t doubt that he prays and thanks God often for his voice, but when I heard him say that he gets down on his knees every night….really? And if he does, more power to him. If I tried to get down on my knees to pray, with the state of my knees, I’m not sure I’d be able to get up again – and I’m a quite a few years younger than Tom!! Great interview, though!

  13. Lloyd Says:

    Wonderful interview…really nice…thanks Ellen.

  14. Stewart Says:

Just got to listen to the interview…one of the best interviews with Tom that I’ve heard. Thanks, Ellen.

Yes, I do believe he gets down on his knees every night to pray. This is not the first time I’ve heard hin say it, and I think Tom is a very spiritual person. It’s something I have picked up on through the years in his singing. It didn’t have to be a gospel song to hear it. You can hear the soul on countless recordings. What makes him so special is both the voice and the soul he projects. A great voice by itself doesn’t necessarily move you, but when you combine it with the spirit and soulfullness that Tom can project, that is special.

Great interview, Does anyone know if Tom’s left eye is prosthetic ? Keep noticing it in many video’s such as this one . Also in many pics in the last decade.
