Happy September! The TJI Question Of The Month

OK, Praise and Blame is out and has been very well-received everywhere. So, now, let’s pause a moment and think of what is coming next.

The TJI September Question of the Month is:

What do you think is the best follow-up album to Praise and Blame? And, why do you think it is the best?

No doubt, “Strange things”, last week #20 (after 4 weeks in the charts) in our Flemish Radio 2 Top 30 (more or less a Flemish Adult Contemporary chart)

  2. Edwin Says:

I think more great R&B I heard tom sing a song in 1994 and 1995 called I Can’t Stand For Falling Down written by Sam of Sam and Dave it is an incredible song great R&B this is what Tom needs to record something of history trip of Rythm and Blues

  3. Paula Says:

I love Praise & Blame. With the Jools Holland and Reload albums it’s one of my faves. I’d like to see Tom next do a mixture of all of them. Collaborate with top contemporary artists to sing the best songs ever — R&B, r ‘n’ r and blues. He is so amazing with any music but he also sings this kind of music the best and from what I have read these are his favorite genres. So he should do them.

  4. Ian Says:

I agree a pure soul or R&B album would be great – stick with the creative theme of P&B (recording with a live band and a talented producer.)

And who says 70 isn’t sexy!!!! I like the tom I saw in vegas a couple of years ago.I’m not that into gospel even though I understand he likes to keep reinventing his music but give me the stuff he sang with gusto from reload and tom jones international his classics rock and roll and bluesy and sexy.Sorry but I don’t think you can seperate the two .Its part of the whole package and he keeps us older ones thinking that older doesn’t mean we’re not sexy either!

  6. Brian Says:

A more traditional blues Gospel album with more songs and maybe a few duets with other strong voiced singers.

  7. Diane Says:

I’m enjoying “Praise and Blame” immensely, because it’s the Sir Tom we haven’t heard. I will probably never get to know him personally, but the impression I get from hearing and seeing him, is that he is very personal, sincere, and has a tremendous amount of feeling (a lot of heart and soul). Because of this, I totally agree with some pure soul, not only because of the man he is, but also because that deep, rich, voice of his just begs to sing soul. I also think some smooth and sultry jazz would be fantastic.

Having been a TJ fan since the beginning, this is my idea. Compose an album of songs that are “his” favorites. Maybe he’s previously recorded some of them, maybe he’s had some of them in his shows, maybe he’s never done some of them . . . I would ask that he select all of the songs on the album – with absolutely little or no input from anyone else. What are his favorites and/or what songs would he really want to record? And then I would ask that he sing one track “acappella” – I’ve seen him do it before in shows (when he says the band doesn’t know the song). It’s more than incredible. And I would request that he put that “stripped down” version of Green, Green Grass of Home on the album (the version he recently did in Vegas) – because I think it’s really unique and different. And for the album cover, I would hire a photographer who would photograph TJ and then process the photo in HDR (where several exposures are merged together) making a surreal image. If he would do the album as “he” wanted to, following the philosophy of “to thine own self be true”, I think it would be a tremendous success. Just my ideas and the way I see things. (And by the way, I love Praise and Blame).

  9. Barb Says:

I love just about everything Tom sings. And, we all know, he can sing anything! That being said, I would still like to have a holiday album with all the beautiful Christmas standards. His voice would certainly brighten my holiday season!

  10. Dana Says:

I like m joost’s idea. But I do recall Tom saying sometime back saying he wanted to do an album in Welsh or of Welsh folk songs.

  11. Gill Says:

How about a rock and roll album.Lets see Tom rip it up as only he can do.

  12. LAO Says:

LOVE Praise and Blame! Would love to see him do an all rythym and blues album….letting his voice shine as it does in the P&B CD. I would also love a Christmas CD that included some Welsh traditional Christmas music.

  13. Oqi Says:

Different genres, but ofc done like P&B, Imo its his best album so far. RocknRoll or then maybe what he does best, RnB… Imo !duet! is not the strongest thing he can do now, its his time to shine alone once again. If he has to, i would pick older artist, maybe just one not a whole album, no thanks.

  14. SusannePDX Says:

I like m joost’s suggestion. I would also like TJ to record a rocky rolly, R&B CD in the vein of Praise & Blame but minus the religous lyrics. Just the pure, raw voice of THE VOICE! :-)

  15. lindag Says:

I would like to see a rock and roll CD recorded similar to P&B with a live band.

  16. Audrey Says:

I agree with Edwin, in that more R&B would be best…this appears to be his greatest forte, and pared down arrangements put the focus on the fabulous voice.

  17. Dre Says:

P&B 2 with a little help from some friends with good voices that’s a good idea.
or a soul/blues kind of cd, both recorded the same way as P&B.

  18. Peter Says:

Ellen- Great question. As self serving as it may seem, I’d love Tom to redo his great older hits, stripping out the sixties backing and instrumentals and updating these great songs. I love these songs in concert, but I don’t listen to them anymore because I’ve heard them enough and frankly they are dated. None the less they are great songs and with fresh instrumentals I think they would find a new audience, just like Tom did with Tommy James’ old song on 24 Hours.-Peter

  19. Martine Says:

My opinion is the same as Diane’s (n°7)

  20. Stewart Says:

I would like to see another Reload album that is recorded with American stars to appeal to an American audience. This would help the album to be successful in the U.S., and a major success in the U.S. would be great for Tom’s career.

BTW, I am still hopeful that as Tom promotes Praise & Blame, it will prove to be very successful in the U.S.

  21. Jim A. Says:

Call me old school, but I’d like TJ’s next album to be in the vein of “Fever Zone” full of R & B and soul (not like the “Mr. Jones” album), a few power ballads much like “Delilah” or “Thunderball.” I know it’s been done before but, hey, I like it. Though, I must admit that I like the ideas of m joost-#8 and Stewart-#20.

  22. Burt Thayer Says:

Praise & Blame is a great CD because it has a great voice, great material, and a great producer. I think Tom needs to focus on those elements for his next record. I am not opposed to another commercial record like a Reload 2. Tom has always had a sexy voice, so he might as well record sexy music. It’s part of who he is. I would also enjoy a live CD/DVD of Tom’s current show. When Tom is ready to put out another greatest hits record, I would love to see those classic hits and music he has done in recent years. Music like “Tom Jones International”, “200 LBs”, “Sugar Daddy”, some “Praise & Blame” and a few new songs. I agree with m joost, bottom line Tom needs to be true to himself. Tom has proven he can sing whatever he wants and be successful.

  23. Martin Says:

I was going to suggest an album with Motown covers, but Phil Collins has beat Tom to it. Oh well, perhaps an blues album, covers from John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf and others.
