TJI Question Of The Month For July: You’re Producing The Next TJ Album…

This year is bringing us what many people are touting as Sir Tom Jones’ signature album. Praise and Blame pretty much covers the only area of music in which Tom has not done an album in the 45 years he’s been recording. The only area still left unsung in an album now is Christmas music and he said in an interview posted here May 14, “Island Records, bless ‘em, they asked for some Christmas music and I thought, Christ! If I can do than then maybe I can go deeper with it? They were almost on the right wavelength so I said, ‘Look, if you want me to do something that is uplifting with a spiritual feeling then why don’t we do it properly?’” Thus, the explanation of Praise and Blame. So….now that we’ve been privileged to hear Tom do every form of music (except, perhaps, opera), it is natural to ask what — if you could put together a track list for Tom’s next album — music would you choose? Would it be blues? Gospel? Rock ‘n’ roll? Ballads? Country? Would it be all one type of music? Or would you mix it up?

The TJI Question of the Month for July is:

Since you will be producing it, will you please describe Tom Jones’ next album? You do not have to name specific songs (although you may do so), but just the genre(s).

  1. adam Says:

If I were producing Tom’s next album I’d want it to be all different genres. I’d like a few duets in there too from some of the people who worked with Tom on his 1999 Reload album. I’d like about 14 songs. Half of which are new material and the other half is covers of popular songs. The song covers on my wish list is are 1.Bad To The Bone 2.Dude Looks Like A Lady 3.Brown Eyed Girl 4.Suspicious Minds 5.That’s Life 6.My Girl 7.Another One Bites The Dust. Also it would be recorded live. Well since It’s my first time to produce a album cut me some slack lol if anyone disagrees.

  2. Raphael Says:

I would like Tom’s next album was a cover of pop, rock, dance songs with collaborations like Reload (The Killers, Kings of Leon, Joe Perry, Aerosmith, Joss Stone, U2, David Guetta, Robbie Williams, Coldplay, Amy Winehouse, etc.)to sing:
1)The reason; 2)I don´t wanna miss a thing (with Joe Perry & Steven Tyler); 3)Human (with The Killers); 4)Viva la vida (with Coldplay); 5)Is this love?; 6)Save the last dance for me; 7)Angel; 8)Man in black; 9)Me and Bobby McGee; 10)Still loving you; 11)Walking in Memphis; 12)It’s a man´s man’s man’s world (featuring Joss Stone); 13) Losing my mind (with Liza Minelli); 14) Forever & One (with Helloween); 15)Always (with Bon Jovi); and new songs.

  3. John Says:

Yes RELOAD 2 It will be great Tom really really

  4. Gill Says:

Just pure rock and roll, all recorded live.

  5. brian Says:

I would release his greatest hits but recorded now with his better voice and maybe throw in a few duets on some of his classics maybe name it HITS FOR THE ERA.

  6. Oqi Says:

    Gill agreed 100%!!!!!!!!!!!!

No HORNS, Big band stuff etc just pure RocknRoll with guitar, piano, bass and drums.. Just like Praise And Blame or like Sun Records sessions by Elvis..

  7. Jorge Says:

Me gustaria un album de mùsica pop como fue At this moment (1989), y tambien que editaran el album de 1996 que nunca salio a la venta de Interescope. I would like a pop album like At This Moment (1989) and, also, the 1996 Interscoppe album that was never sold.

  8. SusannePDX Says:

With exception of “country” which I can do without, I would have TJ mix it up just like his live shows. NO DUETS…I want pure Tom! ;-)

  9. raphael Says:

100% de acuerdo contigo Jorge. 1996 Interscope r’nb record.

  10. Sandra Says:

I would dearly love for Tom to do a Christmas album. The songs he has sung, like “Mary’s Boy Child” was absolutely beautiful. I’d love to hear him sing “White Christmas” , “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”, and all the traditional songs of the season–also, “Bless this House”, I would love to hear him sing that one.. I get chill bumps just thinking about hearing Tom singing these beautiful songs. No kiddie songs, just Christmas music for adults. Maybe done with David Foster’s orchestra. Why he has not used his glorious voice to do this is a mystery to me.

  11. Sandra Says:

PS–Some duets would be fine, but mostly, all Tom.

  12. Dre Says:

If money is no problem…….an international musical album. I would like him to do an album together with Robbie Williams, (Now i would be flat, broke and busted already) Bono (Sugar Daddy), Michael Buble (Everything, Haven t met you jet), Paul MCartney (the long and winding road, finally), Duffy, Beyonce, Lisa Marie Presley (why me lord), Joss Stone, Mariah Carey (With you i am born again) Whithey Houston (Endless love, Could i have this kiss) and let them record whatever they feel up to as long as they are classics, or something original that’s realy good. I forgot Cold Play, Green day and Pearl Jam.(total financial meltdown by now).
Live recordings just like the praise and blame album, and same producer, i like the sounds and arrangement of what i heard until now. Part of the revenue going to ” war child” or another good cause helping children.

We could als do an international songcontest, people can come in and play theire songs in front of a panel, the 25 best songs will be presented by the writes to tom and his producer they work 17 or so out and finally choose 12 for an album, the unknow songwriters wil get the change to get noticed and make some money. (something like x factor or idols for songwriters), part of the reveneu going to a good cause.

  13. Dre Says:

i just got carried away a little sorry.

  14. Moderator Says:

Dre: Don’t apologize. You put a lot of thought into a very creative answer.

  15. Dre Says:

third and last suggestion a blues album, he may record whatever he wants, but with ethan johns as a producer. Optionaly guests of his choice or people who would like to contribute to the album some mentioned above..

  16. Ruben Says:

Estoy totalmente de acuerdo con Jorge y Raphael! :)

  17. Peter Says:

Without having heard Praise and Blame, I’d love another “24 Hours”, which I think is Tom’s best. That being said, the Tom and Jools collaboration was terrific, so we may be getting something just as great with the new album. I’d say lay off the Christmas album, but as I spend three weeks every year listening to Frank, Dean, Tony and Goulet, I’d love to have my favorite singer belting out a few holiday tunes. I’ll be at opening night in Vegas and am intersested to see how much of Praise and Blame gets integrated into the show.

  18. Carole Says:

Dre: I would buy your international album in a minute – great idea! My second choice would also be a blues album – he sings the blues so well.

Off subject: On the Lost Highway website, “Praise and Blame” only has 11 tracks listed – perhaps the 12th track is not finalized yet, or perhaps, there won’t be one for the U.S version. Glad I ordered mine from Townsend!

  19. Barb Says:

I totally agree with Sandra. I would love to have a Christmas album. It is hard to believe that over the last 45+ years Tom has never done an album of Christmas classics. I know it might sound old fashioned, but Tom’s voice and his ability to make a song his own would certainly blow all the other holiday albums out of the water.

  20. Mary Says:

In complete agreement with Barb and Sandra, Silent Night, Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, What Child Is This? What are you doing New Year’s Eve? Get the picture…………..Hearing all of the classsics sung by Tom would be a dream come true!

  21. Audrey M Says:

Not sure about an entire Christmas album, but I do like the idea of a Reload 2. Just like there was the holiday song Baby It’s Cold Outside on the first version, I would like to hear what Tom would do with Elvis’ Merry Christmas Baby.

  22. Martine Says:

I definitely agree with SusannePDX (n°8)

  23. EMMA Says:

I WOULD LIKE MY DARLING TOM TO DO A CHRISTMAS ALBUM SONGS LIKE WHITE CHRISTMAS. ROCKING AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE. WAR IS OVER. BLUE CHRISTMAS.
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERY BODY. DO THEY KNOW IT’S CHRSTMAS. AND SO ON IF SIR TOM WOULD DO THE SONGS STATED I FOR ONE WOULD HAVE IT AND PLAY IT ALL THE TIME PLEASE SIR TOM DO A ALL TIME CHRISTMAS ALBUM
    FROM YOUR ALL TIME FAN

  24. Diane Says:

Just think to be that close working with this man whom we’ve all admired for more than forty years, would simply be the ultimate gift a fan could receive, the chance of a lifetime. I can dream, right? I like the idea of a Christmas CD, but with all kinds of holiday music, like Kenny Rogers “The Gift” CD, definitely something Welsh or Celtic, or something like Elvis’s “If Every Day was Like Christmas”. Of course I’d ask Sir Tom to write something, describing what Christmas and the holidays mean to him. My other idea would be to produce a smooth jazz CD, something on the order of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, George Benson, and even something from one of the female greats, like Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald. Again I’d ask Sir Tom to write and record something of his own.

  25. lindag Says:

I have to agree that a Christmas CD would be great to play all year long. However, my first wish would be for some good old fashion rock & roll with a few of the blues recorded live.

  26. bebe Says:

Maybe so many fans ask for a christmas album because that’s really what tom hasn’t done before. But back to your question ellen – producing the next tj album: I would di a praise and blame 2 or more praise and no blame ;) … Just want to say that I love the direction tom is going with his current album and I hope he will stay on this track for a little while … Love to hear “grandmas hands” and “git me some” recorded also :)

  27. Anna Says:

The man can sing some serious “Blues”. He dang well has a lot of “Soul” love to see him go towards that on his next run in the studio.

As for a Christmas album no thank you. Tom has a lot more to offer than singing some holiday tunes. I just have to put on This is Tom Jones Christmas for that fix once a year.

  28. Tammy S Says:

To produce the next Tom Jones album would be a dream come true for me! I would title it “From The Heart” and it would encompass all musical genres that Mr. Jones has explored during his musical career. This album would differ from all the rest in that all the songs would be written by Mr. Jones himself. He has so much talent to share with the world and this would provide the perfect forum for him to do it.

  29. gaillovestj Says:

I agree with a lot of what was suggested. Any future album should have Grandma’s Hands – love that song. Also like to see him do some good old rock and role mixed in with other types of music. He can sing anything! Would love to see him in concert do Chubby’s song Lets do the Twist”
