Tom’s Last 2 In Australia: 10,000 People At One; “Small” Crowd — 3,500 — At The Other
Monday, March 15th, 2010
Tom ended the Australian leg of his tour in great style in front of 10,000 people in Perth, West Australia (right). The night before, near Melbourne, there was a crowd about 40 percent smaller than expected. But if you read the article below this, you’ll see that the responsibility falls right into the lap of the tour organizer. But, it was Tom who got the blame because he “appeals to an older demographic.”The guy who said that is a….um…..I’ll say jerk. Tomorrow we’ll have more from Perth and, soon, a review, photos and video from a fan who saw Tom in Melbourne.
Knickers fly at Tom Jones concert

The knickers were off before Tom Jones even hit the stage.
Fans went crazy for the now 69-year-old Sex Bomb who showed the crowd he has still got it last night at the final A Day on the Green concert for the season. They had been warmed up by David Campbell set and were truly ready to rock.
Women held their knickers aloft as Jones stalked onto the stage, and plenty attempted to throw them at his feet, though it was such a distance that most didn’t make it.

They lost their minds as the singer belted out songs including Delilah, If I Only Knew, It’s Not Unusual, She’s A Lady and Mama Told Me Not To Come.
Wives grooved, screamed, whistled and jumped their way through the exciting set, while husbands sat patiently beside them, some getting up to join the throng of dancing women during encore. It certainly was lady’s night.
From the minute he started belting out tunes, starting with Sugar Daddy, Jones had the massive crowd of nearly 10,000 people grounds excited.
“I’ve got the moves,” he declared, proving it with a couple of crotch-grabbing manouvers and plenty of hip thrusting throughout the evening.
“It’s good to be back once again in Perth,” he told the crowd.
“We were here five years ago now, it’s amazing how time flies!”
His hit Delilah really kicked off the madness, with the audience taking part in a massive sing-a-long, some women holding their knickers aloft as they swayed along to the tune.
During one particularly hot moment the singer flashed his toned abdomen, sending the crowd into yet another frenzy.
All agreed Jones’ sex appeal has not diminished with age.

It has been a fabulous season of A Day on the Green events at Sandalford Winery, with Ronan Keating, Rob Thomas and the Motown gig attracting big audiences. Next season the event will move to a new home, which has yet to be announced.
Last night was a fitting end to the Swan Valley events.
Take Me Back To The Party.
All right. Fair is fair. But the article itself and two of the three photos accompanying it — which show people clearly under 30 at Tom’s concert — belies the headline that infers that if “Tom Jones fails to draw crowd” it must be the fault of Tom Jones. Well, maybe it is. But the article also notes that the date of the festival was changed from December, when it’s been held for quite awhile, and that the show conflicted with another big festival nearby. And, yes, depending upon the show, Tom may draw an older crowd. But we’ve all seen him draw people of a broad age range — literally, 18 to 80. Well, it was their loss. He has now finished with Australia and is moving next to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Day on the Green: Tom Jones fails to draw crowd
SALLY EVANS/15 Mar, 2010 09:44 AM?Border Mail, AU
INTERNATIONAL superstar Tom Jones drew a disappointing crowd of just 3,500 people at A Day on The Green at Wahgunyah on Saturday.
Organisers have vowed to review the line-up next year after the concert in the past has attracted up to 6,000 music fans.
Promoter Michael Newton said he had high hopes for the sixth A Day on the Green held at All Saints Estate.
“To get a big international and then to get that result was a little bit disappointing,” he said.
“It’s possible that Tom appealed to an older demographic whereas traditionally our shows have been younger than that.
“It’s a shame because the show was just so good.
“The people there absolutely loved it — they had a ball.”
Mr Newton said moving the concert date from January to March might have also led to a decline in crowd numbers.
The date was changed after last year’s concert was held in almost 43-degree (111ºF) heat.
Although the temperature was a near-perfect 25 (77ºF) degrees on Saturday afternoon, the show this year clashed with the popular Tastes of Rutherglen festival.
Mr Newton said organisers would look at another date next year.
Among those who were unfazed by the smaller crowd was Glenn Abrahams, who travelled five hours from Phillip Island especially to see Jones in the concert.
Mr Abrahams said he had been a big fan of Jones, 69, for about 20 years.
“He’s the ultimate — you’ve got to see him,” he said.
“It was Elvis or Tom, and he’s the last one left.”
Robyn Moran, of Wahgunyah, was watching Jones perform live for a second time after attending one of his shows in Sydney nearly 30 years ago.
She confessed to throwing her knickers at the superstar back then, but had no plans to re-enact it at the weekend.
Albury’s Linda Orchard welcomed the change of date after attending A Day on the Green for the past two years.
“The last one was like 40 degrees and it was stinking hot and dusty,” she said.
“It is adventurous, but it’s really uncomfortable also.
“It’s just perfect weather today.”
Other performances on the night were by The Wolfgramm Sisters and David Campbell.
