Great New Video of Tom In Chile — Seeing It Today, It’s A Bit Sad & A New 20+ Minute Radio Interview

Tom in Chile, February 7, 2010.

Between February 6th and 10th, Tom played three dates in Chile where the audiences were ecstatic to have him there. On February 6, he played Viña del Mar, a beach resort on the ocean. The next day February 7, Tom played in Talca, Chile and on February 10th he was in Santiago. By now you know that, on February 27 at 3:34 am, an earthquake hit the country. Talca is just 65 miles from the epicenter of the earthquake that shook the city as if it were a small toy in a giant’s hand. Santiago and Viña del Mar, were also hit very hard. How big was the quake?

According to the Wall Street Journal, “Data from the U.S. Geological Survey suggests that this morning’s Chile quake tied in fifth place with an 8.8 quake that hit Ecaduor and Bolivia in 1906. Only four quakes have been bigger since 1900. The largest was a 9.5 magnitude event that struck Chile in 1960, causing 1,655 fatalities, leaving 2 million homeless, and triggering a tsunami that killed people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines.”

For this post TJI posted video of Tom at the Festival Antofagasta that hasn’t been posted here before. The quality isn’t terrific but it leaves o doubt about the crowd’s response. Watching the audience one cannot help wondering where they are today. Hopefully, those joyous people loving the show are all safe.

You can watch Tom singing It’s Not Unusual and Kiss at the Festival Antofagasta on February 7…

…AND, right below that video, you can hear the 20+ minute radio interview which contains one of the few times he’s discussed his bands. You will find them both in the TJI.com Video Library.

  1. Tammy S. Says:

I had a moment of inspiration earlier when I was listening to one of Mr. Jones’ cd’s from his definitive collection. The song titled ‘Give Me Shelter’ speaks volumes as to the plight of those unfortunate people in Chile. Wouldn’t it be great if that song could be played and every time it was money would be raised to help with relief efforts. He is clearly loved and adored everywhere he goes near and far. Recognizable and familiar to so many even more help could be just a lyric or two away.

  2. Moderator Says:

You’re right, Tammy, it is an apt song. Gimme Shelter was written by Rolling Stones Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and was the lead track on the band’s 1969 album Let It Bleed. The song was not originally released as a single but was in their stage show. In 2004 Rolling Stone (magazine) placed the song at #38 on the list of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Though written to express the turmoil of the late 60s, the lyrics are apt today: “Oh, a storm is threat’ning, My very life today; If I don’t get some shelter, Oh yeah, I’m gonna fade away.”

In 1993, a CD was released On Food Records that featured many different versions of the song. That’s where Tom’s version originated. He recorded the song with the alt band New Model Army to benefit the “Putting Our House in Order” project of the Shelter charity in the UK.

It is great that you posted the relief links for us. We can’t be reminded enough that we have the power to help others in the world who are in desperate straits due to these horrific acts of nature.

  4. Jane Says:

I echo Nancy’s sentiments and have been watching tj.com for a message “from” Tom about Chile. Also, really enjoyed the video from Chile and the Australian interview even tho I was surprised about him saying the band had other opportunities and wanted to leave his employ.

  5. Brian Says:

My wife and I have just seen him in the Hunter Valley Australia. He does some of the 24 hrs tracks. What a performance!!!!! Absolutly fantastic. The consumate performer. Tom had us all in the palm of his hand for nearly 2 hours. If you are into him and his music whatever it takes go and see him before he calls it a day.
You won’t be disappointed, You will be glad you have seen him at this stage of his performing life, Truly a great experience worthy of its place in my most memorable times on this earth. Thank you Tom.
