Here’s where you’ll find TJ photos and stories that don’t fit into any other categories. It is, as its name says, just for fans — and, hopefully, for fun.

TJ Tells A Joke

As he often does these days, Tom was talking about age — you know, “sixty-nine was good at 45…” — Wednesday night when he turned to the band and asked, “Shall I tell the joke?”

Now, Tom occasionally veers away from the prepared spontaneous remarks into genuine spontaneity. And, of course, he is rightly proud of how great he looks and sounds as he nears 70.

So, Tom began to talk about a man he met who told him a story. (The “I” in the beginning is the other man, not Tom. He is merely quoting the man.)

I wasn’t at that show but, fortunately, lots of fans were and one shot some video. This is a funny, but risqué story so if you’re liable to be offended, please skip it.

You can watch here as Tom tells the joke.

As usual, if you cannot view the video, please drop me note using the “Contact TJI” link at right and I’ll send it to you. But, because of the conditions under which it was shot, you should be aware that the sound is the important thing here.

Tom has always had a good sense of humour, and who knows we may see him as a stand up comedian after his singing days.Hope thats not for a long time yet!

Yes, he certainly does love to tell a story – and he’s so good at it! I could listen to him tell stories and jokes all day (but at the end of the day, I’d still want to hear that voice belting out a song or two…LOL!!). Tom has a great sense of humor – a bit risque and naughty at times – but I love it!! Thanks for sharing this with us, Ellen.

I was fortunate enough to be at that show and as I was reading and listening once again, a question occurred to me. I’ve seen Tom in many venues and he will often talk to the audience or respond to them. But only twice have I ever heard him tell an actual joke. Both times were in Las Vegas, the other night and in 2008 or 2009 (don’t remember exactly) when he told a joke he said someone had texted to Don. Does he do it elsewhere? If not, my theory is that he feels so comfortable in Las Vegas and that comfort includes being able to joke like this.

I was also at that show. He certainly seemed relaxed and was having a good time. Thanks for sharing the joke. It was fun to hear it again. The time goes so fast when he is on stage performing. Seems like you just sit down and the show is over. Well I have more memories until I see him again. What a Voice!!!!!

I have heard him tell a joke once or twice in Canada – not often – but he is quite funny when he is in the mood

Tom has told the “69 was good at 45” joke, virtually every night for the last 45 years. Every time he tells it, the audience laughs, yet I don’t think anybody really gets it? (I think everybody laughs, because their afraid to look dumb if they show they don’t really get it) I for one, don’t get it. Tom seems obsessed with it. Maybe somebody will be kind enough to explain it? Sorry if I’m the only dumb dumb.

Jane. Don’t worry others also get some good jokes. I was in fits of laughter at the Zurich show. Tom is really taking a lot of attention in choosing his stories. He chose to talk about an Austrian singer that all German speaking people (older than 30) know of (Peter Alexander). Peter is a bit older than Tom and had some hits with German versions of “Delilah” and “Help Yourself”. I am a big fan of his too (he was a popular movie star in the 50’s-80’s) and I loved his cheesy musicals when I was little.
Tom joked about the “competition” he had with Peter in the 60’s. But how Tom is still going strong (well Peter is around 85 now I think)

Sharon, sorry I would explain but I don’t want to offend anyone here. It’s quite “saucy” but when Tom says it, it’s hilarious. He always knows to keep it funny and not cross the line to dirty. I love that.
