Video: Tom Sings “Save The Last Dance For Me”
Tuesday, October 20th, 2009
Today TJI has a video of Sir Tom doing a beautiful job singing Save The Last Dance For Me the not-a-country-song originally done by Ben E. King and the Drifters that was discussed at some length in an earlier post. It is a lovely rendition but it also crystallizes the reasons why many videos posted on the web can be so frustrating to watch.
The first few bars of the song are missing and the camera isn’t as steady as it might be. It is, nonetheless, valuable video for those of us who haven’t seen this song performed.
A fine example of making a potentially terrific video pretty bad and frustrating is found in another video I saw on youtube. At first, it looked terrific. The first minute or so is excellent. But the rest is a mess. It’s nine+ minutes of Tom performing but the person who put it together just edited it willy-nilly — with songs inexplicably cut off and strung together like a set of beads that don’t match. And it had to take a great deal of time to do that. Better do nothing. This all makes me appreciate the people who send video to TJI that is done with such care. Oh, well, editorial finished.
You an watch the video of Save The Last Dance For Me here.
As usual, if you cannot view it, please drop me note using the “Contact TJI” link at right and I’ll send it to you.
Thanks, Dre.

I saw a clip where Tom introduced this as “Tex/Mex” so maybe the “Tex” bit is where he’s getting the country connection. I’m fairly ignorant on the subject but it didn’t sound country to me.

Sir Tom looks to be very comfortable now with this song, put his own style into it. Thanks for the video Ellen; I’m still enjoying it.

I enjoyed this departure from the “usual” setlist. Tom obviously had fun singing it and he looked wonderful!

It’s delightful, it’s delicious, it’s delovely! Just like Tom! Like the kind of Samba/Rumba vibe to this – reminds me a bit of “In Style and Rhythm.” A great song for Tom and he seems to enjoy singing it; fits his voice well, he’s able to hit the notes without strain and you can hear that lovely baritone in spots that makes you feel all melty! PURR-FECT!
