Tom Jones — The Singer, Not the Film — At The Academy Awards

Later or tomorrow: A review (and, maybe, photos) of Tom Sunday night at Harrahs Rincon in San Diego.

Picture 3Tom Jones has sung a lot of songs used in a lot of soundtracks. Of these, the most enduring is, of course, What’s New Pussycat? the Burt Bacharach-Hal David song Tom’s been singing for almost 45 years in his shows.

When the song was up for an Academy Award in 1965 — the first year the awards were telecast in color — Tom was not there to sing his massive hit. The song lost to The Shadow of Your Smile.

Tom’s next biggest soundtrack hit was the title song from the Bond film Thunderball, also in 1965.

In 1976 Tom sang Come To Me from Tthe Pink Panther Strkes Back and it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song at the 1976 Academy Awards, which were presented March 28, 1977 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles.

The winner that year was Evergreen, by Barbra Streisand and Paul Williams and Tom’s song is pretty much forgotten while the latter is almost a standard.

But, it got our Tom on the Academy Awards show. Here he is singing Come To Me at the Academy Awards.

As usual, if you cannot view it, drop me a note via the “contact” link at right and I’ll send it.

Thanks, Keith,

Video & Audio: Carson And A Sound Bite From The Other Night

Tom is at Harrahs Rincon in San Diego at the Open Sky Theatre tonight! Tickets are still available. (Wish Ticketmaster would use a photo of Sir Tom that shows his skin is not a creepy pinkish-gray.) If you go to the show please share your experience with TJI.com..

Picture 2

Lots have people have seen two separate videos from the The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson that have been posted on youtube and linked to on countless sites. Four people sent the links to TJI today.

So, what I did was put those two videos together to form one clip of that TJ appearance. The date was December 3, 1985. Tom was interviewed — told of a fight he and his wife had at Westbury — and then he sang the outrageously gorgeous Andrew Lloyd Webber song from (IMHO, the otherwise awful) Cats.

The quality of the video is quite poor, but you might still enjoy it. You can watch the it in the TJI.com Video Library.

AND!!! Before you turn to that, you may want to eavesdrop on Tom’s conversation with Portia at the show on Sunday at the MGM Grand when she asked him for a signature that could be tattooed.. It’s not very loud, but if you listen carefully, it’s fun to hear and you can do so by clicking here.

A Note From Tom’s Official Site & A Comment From TJI

(Don’t miss the post below about the very nice incident the other night at the MGM and about Sir Tom’s new watch.)

Tomjones.com posted this note today: “This is the official website for Tom Jones. We work very hard at keeping you regularly updated with news and correct information, to keep you up-to-date with Sir Tom’s movements. We would like to make fans aware that any news or announcements published on any other site is pure speculation or rumor. You haven’t heard anything officially until you hear it here first, so please stay with us for official news.”

Clearly they are upset about this entire December-in-Las-Vegas business. Even Thursday, when I posted the latest note about that gig, I said what has been heard about it and cautioned people, “The dates are still on [tomjones.com] but, if I had to make travel arrangements, I’d still wait until tickets go on sale. As noted repeatedly elsewhere on this site, I hope I am wrong and that all the people we heard this from are wrong and that he will be here. But, please, just wait before making any plans to see him here that will cost you money up front. Airlines are pretty unforgiving of ‘mistakes.’”

You know, of course, that TJI.com is a fan site and, while our focus is on Sir Tom Jones, our primary mission as stated on our homepage is to serve the fans who have kept him prominent for 4+ decades. He’s amazing, but so are (most of*) his fans. (TJI.com has never claimed to be “official,” nor compared the official site with this one. I posted their note above on this site because, (1) for whatever reason, a lot of fans who visit this site do not visit the home page of tj.com — they go to the forum — (2) it’s important that everyone see this information and (3) I wanted to respond. As I wrote to them, they are management. Er, make that “Management.” No one else ever claimed to be.)

While I cannot vouch for other sites, TJI.com always cautions waiting until you see something on the official site before acting. I stand by that advice and apologize for any misunderstanding about what I post here. If something is rumor, even when I’ve heard it from several sources, it is posted as “rumor” and people are advised to check TJ.com. If I post something as fact, to the best of my knowledge, it is fact. And, as I always say, if I’m wrong, I’ll correct it; check with tomjones.com.

But, maybe to prove all the speculation is wrong, Sir Tom will be here in December. Now that would be nice and a correction I look forward to posting.

—Ellen

*Some fans, as you know, are not amazing and give all fans a bad rap. But that’s another story and doesn’t mean the fans who visit this site.

The New Watch Tom’s Wearing and The Watch He Endorses Along With Some Miscellanea

One incident I forgot to mention: It was pretty late Monday night and three of us were in one of the bars at the MGM (A bar? Imagine that!) when, all of a sudden, Tom and his party walked in the side entrance of the bar. They’d finished dinner and probably wanted to have a drink. Unfortunately, the joint was full and there were no empty seats. Tom didn’t pull any “I’m a star!!!” stuff. He looked around, waved warmly to someone he knew whom he spotted at one of the tables and, with his party in tow, quickly walked out the front of the bar. He turned left, heading toward the elevators back the way he’d come. All of a sudden, people in the place realized “That’s Tom Jones!!!” A couple of people ran to see him out the side door with their cameras at the ready. As he passed the side entrance of the bar, he waved and they took photos. Then it happened. A massive cheer went up for him. There was about 30 seconds of sustained applause and shouted appreciation as he walked down the hall. The cheering was heard a few hundred yards away and it was a lovely moment. Clearly, Sir Tom Jones is someone people appreciate. If you doubt it, you just had to be there at that moment. Those few spontaneous seconds of affirmation — out of the blue rather than after a performance — must have made him feel good, don’t you think? (And, no, the name of the bar isn’t important. The reception for Tom was.)

Fun Fact? On Friday night’s Late Show With David Letterman there was a segment called “Fun Facts.” The first one was, “Maine is the only state with a one-syllable name.” Interesting and, maybe, fun. But then, out of nowhere came this “fun fact:” “A lot of guys get laid, but no one gets laid like Tom Jones.” This is posted with no comment except to wonder if Dave has lost his mind. On the other hand, he could have named just about any hot sex symbol, so maybe it’s a compliment.

watchbellagio watch ads

In May 2008, TJI showed you Tom’s new watch. It’s the one he’s wearing in the photo bottom right.

It is one of five or so custom-made watches from Bellagio Time. It was a limited edition, David Beckham owns another of those.

Tom is now wearing another, even less subtle, version of that watch (left). The ad for that watch is at top right.

Bellagio Time also makes a whole collection of Elvis Watches. In addition to Sir Tom (whose endorsement is shown at the bottom right), the watches are endorsed by — maybe “endorsed” is the wrong word as they use the celebrity photos with quotes about Elvis — Bono, Cher, Mick Jagger and (of course he couldn’t endorse the watch!) John Lennon.

These watches range in price from around 90 USD to 214 USD. There are also pendants, “TCB” dog tags and Elvis Voice® presentation cases.

It is a collection that’s worth a look but I have to ask: Isn’t it odd that they put that “®” next to Elvis’ name in Tom’s testimonial/endorsement?

Moderator’s Note: I’ve been asked by Tom’s management to retract the post below about what Sir Tom is doing in December. I hope the information I and several other people have is incorrect and that Tom will be here in December. The dates are still on his site but, if I had to make travel arrangements, I’d still wait until tickets go on sale. As noted repeatedly elsewhere on this site, I hope I am wrong and that all the people we heard this from are wrong and that he will be here. But, please, just wait before making any plans to see him here that will cost you money up front. Airlines are pretty unforgiving of “mistakes.”

I always have mixed feelings about posting video like this. One one hand, the person who took it violated the rule about cameras in the theater so, it is in the word of someone I know, “naughty.”

On the other hand, there are so many fans who don’t get to see a live show that this is the only way they can even have a small taste of the experience. So…..

Anyway, here’s Tom singing Git Me Some, most of It’s Not Unusual and some of Kiss. The fan who took the video was clearly seated stage left, so the view is what was seen from that seat. (Maybe, table 2 or 3). I do not ever — have never — shot any video, so I appreciate the effort it took.

Of course, the screen shot is of Tom and his great MD, Brian Monroney doing It’s Not Unusual.

You can watch the it in the TJI.com Video Library. Enjoy!

And from the files of Daily Dispatch in South Africa comes this brief from 30 years ago today:
AUGUST 21, 1979: Engelbert Humperdinck (name borrowed irreverently from the German composer), the British entertainer, remains one of the highest paid in the world – eight weeks annually in Las Vegas at a reported £172000. Enge, as he prefers to be called, now mixes his concerts with everything from rock ’n roll to disco. “My first manager handled two stars – Tom Jones and me. The manager said I could only sing romantic ballads, while Jones did rock ’n roll.” He was born Arnold Dorsey and grew up as one of 10 children. One schmaltzy ballad, Release Me, made him a star on both sides of the Atlantic.

From the Burton Mail in Burton on Trent:

Tom’s coming home

This year Tom is bringing a show that presents repertoire from the 60s to the present to audiences in a variety of venues across the world and reviews in the US have been abundant with praise.

The tour will kick off on Friday, October 9 in Cardiff and Tom will perform at Birmingham LG Arena on Sunday, October 18. Tickets can be purchased by logging on to www.livenation.co.uk

What About December? Some News; Tom Ends This Run At MGM

TJI is so pleased to end all the speculation and consternation and tell you that in December, instead of doing the MGM Grand gig, Tom will be recording in England. Don’t have any more details, but we’ll keep you posted if we can get them. (The MGM Grand is aware of this but, because they’ve never posted any kind of appearance schedule involving Tom in December, you’ll find nothing about it on their website.) Despite some naysayers, we can also tell you Tom will be back at the MGM in January. No speculation on what he’s recording, for or with whom he’s recording, but it’s nice to hear that’s what he’s doing.

Tomorrow TJI will have video of Tom at the MGM and, Saturday, news of a new piece of jewelry. So please be sure to stop by.

this is itjacket 1Tom’s last two nights at the MGM Grand were great fun. He was in a good mood — especially Tuesday night — and clearly enjoyed being there.

On Tuesday, as he was singing he had some trouble with his ear piece. “They call it ‘technology,’” he said as he fiddled with it. “I call it a pain.”

Hoping to fix the problem by jiggling the associated box sitting in the small of his back, he said, “Maybe we’ve got to put a shilling in the meter. [A reference to an outdated way of making electricity work.] Does anyone remember that?”

A bit later, as he was sitting down to do his soul thing he noticed one of his buttons undone. As he fixed it someone called out, “Take it off!”

He replied, “Well, they’ll all be open before the night ends.”

Then he began an a capella rendition of a country song recorded by many people, including Ernest Tubb and Merle Haggard called Who Will Buy the Wine. that goes, in part: “Not so long ago you held our baby’s bottle; But the one you’re holding now’s a different kind; And you’d never know whose lips you’ll soon be kissin’; Cause it all depends on who will buy the wine.”

singWhen he was finished, he commented, “Country songs always get right to the point.”

{Yes, they do. Have you heard him sing Lady Lay Down?]

And so it went. Tom was responsive to the audience, smiling at those he knew and, to the chagrin of some other audience members, paying special attention to a visitor from New York. [To those who get annoyed by such things and who pass judgment, the only response is to tell them to grow up, give it up and relax. This man is an accomplished, consummate showman. He knows his audience and what will hold their attention. And paying attention to one member of the audience does this. One might think those who get annoyed with his taking time and paying attention to others in the audience are simply jealous. Correction! One pretty much knows they're jealous.]

A good time was had by all.

Closing night it was more of the same. A fan named Patti gave Tom a nice towel to wipe the sweat from his brow and chest, he returned it and she, in turn, gave the towel to Jessica who carefully nestled it in a plastic bag and carried it with her all evening, even to the other end of The Strip.

And, while it’s too bad he won’t be here in December, recording is a good thing. Who knows, maybe in 2010 he’ll make up the time with extra weeks in Las Vegas.

In the photos above from this run at the MGM, Tom’s showing us “this is it” during 200 Pounds and, obviously, taking off his jacket before You Can Leave Your Hat On.

And, on a personal note, I want to say that it was particularly great this time seeing friends I’ve made through TJI and getting to know some people better, thus turning acquaintances into friends. Hope to see you all in January….or March….or anytime soon.

From LA Weekly: So Right, So Wrong; & MSN Should Be Ashamed Of Themselves

WIN TICKETS TO WHAT MAY BE AN HISTORIC CONCERT!! Another chance to win tickets to the 02 Rockwell Concert on September 11. This time, the Mirror is just asking you “to simply tell us why you should win this great prize.”

You can enter in the comments section on the link above. Two winners of a pair of tickets each will be notified by next Wednesday, August 26. (And you don’t have to live in the UK to enter.)

If you ever doubted being a celebrity can be difficult/annoying/bothersome, here are two things to consider: First, last night at the MGM Tom’s dinner was repeatedly interrupted by “fans” going to his table, asking for photos, etc., while he was still dining — not just sitting with an aprés dinner drink, but eating appetizers then entreé and coffee. It was rude and people should know better. The second proof that it’s difficult to be in the public light may be found in this article from the LA Weekly. She says nice things — all subjective — but when it comes to plain ol’ objective truth, she falls down badly. The facts: Tom was knighted in 2007 and, as reported here, TJI’s best information has him staying in LA. And, really, someone with his income doesn’t have to worry about “socialized healthcare for the elderly.” Ms. Gilmartin needs to learn to fact check! And, if she insists upon talking about age, why use a photo (lovely as it is) from 1978? One expects more from a Village Voice publication! Jeez! *

Tom Jones: Date/Time:Tue., August 25, 8:00pm: Price: $30-$100 (Tickets are still available and it’s a lovely, classic venue.)

Picture 3Hip Stir

By Wendy Gilmartin

Always the consummate ladies’ man, Sir Tom Jones — knighted in March of this year — is 69 years old and still gets piles of panties thrown at his feet. He’s a multifaceted performer whom very few leading men can match, what with his mellow, manly timbre that only breaks during those over-the-top moments of emotional climax. And then there are those sleepy eyes, curly locks, cheek bones and hips. No dumpy indie boy can compare. Hence Jones has culled an age-spanning female audience over the years with his tender-yet-tough crowd pleasers, like Delilah, Treat Her Right, She’s a Lady, and his unforgettable cover of Prince’s Kiss, which, even more strangely, he recorded with the Art of Noise. But tonight’s show will have a tinge of sadness attached to it. Just last month Jones revealed he’s planning to move back to the U.K. after 35 years in Los Angeles. The green, green grass of the British Isles looks even nicer with its universal socialized health care for the elderly, eh, Tom? We ladies will truly miss you.

Here’s a really nasty bit from the UK MSN blog. Here Tom is called “frightening” and this idiot says Tom Jones makes a “horrible sound.” It’s actually disgusting and why Tom would consider moving back in the face of that kind of press is a puzzlement. And it’s not sunny there like it is in California. (Good decision to stay (or so we’ve heard). There is no direct contact info for this Tom Townsend, the “writer,” but you can write to MSN,Music if you wish to comment on the article.

*(Sorry for the rant; It was a strange night last night. I’ll be explaining some of that on the October 10 anniversary of TJI when I’ll tell you the whys and wherefores of changes this site has undergone since June 30.Meanwhile, even though it wasn’t my doing nor is it my place to apologize for anyone else, I want to apologize to anyone who heard the filth pouring out of Ursula’s mouth last night in the Hollywood Theatre after the show. It was very unnecessary and very wrong and, sadly, very characteristic. I am quite embarrassed that I responded a bit in kind, repeating her obscenity in a retort. I apologize.

The article about Tom’s last two nights in Las Vegas in 2009 will appear tomorrow. On Friday, look for video a fan from Europe took at the MGM. She’s said she’s sending it and, if and when it arrives, I’ll post it.)

More About December At the MGM Grand

Later on Wednesday, a story about the Tuesday night show will be posted here, along with a photo or two that people have been kind enough to send us.

But, for now, TJI wants you to know that the likelihood is excellent that Tom will not be in Las Vegas in December.

Although the gig is still posted on his official website as running from December 3 through12, a strong caution is in order: Until you see tickets on sale, don’t make plans to visit Las Vegas at that time to see Tom.

The word “on the street” (that street, for convenience’s sake, being Las Vegas Boulevard) is that Tom will be doing “something else” at that time. What? Who knows? (Maybe Gavin & Stacey?) But TJI heard from two practically unimpeachable sources that he won’t be here. He will be here in January.

Of course, as one fan pointed out tonight, his MGM contract is usually 10 to 12 weeks a year (two weeks at a time) so he’d owe two to four weeks. That’s happened before — that’s when he started doing MGM in December a few years ago. But, with business the way it is here now — even the traditionally hardest ticket to get is easily available — maybe everyone involved would prefer to wait until the economy is better to make up that time. Tom’s show is very popular, but these days isn’t filled. Of course, with the rodeo here in December it usually is filled then….

TJI hopes this information is wrong but, again, you might be better off waiting until there’s definitive word on the subject.

One Fan’s Tale of Tom: A Signature, A Tattoo &, Oh, Yes, A Horse

tat

The show on Monday was terrific. With crowds across the city still down (gaming revenues took another nosedive in the latest statistics) the house was about half full. But that didn’t mean a lack of enthusiasm.

Tom talked more than usual and did his thong thing (“eyepatch”). A good time was had by all.

portiaOne of the people having a good time was Portia, a fan from the midwest with boundless enthusiasm for Sir Tom and with, one imagines, a very understanding spouse. She is also, I am happy to say, a regular visitor to TJI.com

At any rate, it was she who asked Tom to autograph her shoulder on Sunday night (photo above left) so she could have his sig tattooed. Tonight she came to the show with her new tattoo.

She also mentioned that she used to have a horse called “TJ.” “But,” she explained, “his registered name — as opposed to the stable name, TJ — was Tom Jones Is A Stud.”

She is, indeed, a fan. A very happy fan.

Here’s an article on the Outside Lands Festival from the San Jose Mercury News. It’s long and there’s little about Tom except this near-the-end nugget of truth: “Regardless whether his popularity is twinged with irony for many, Jones puts on a great show.”

Tom At the MGM August 16: A Fun Show With Pussycats, Tattoos & Some Reflection On the Past

stage litterclose up

At the MGM Sunday night, Tom bounded onstage like a guy who has everything — he seemed happy to be where he was and in the midst of a good day. He was in a mood for fun and the audience went with him.

Tom’s voice sounded great and he looked great, too.

It was one of those rare nights when he was totally responsive to the audience. At one point — and you’ll read more and, hopefully, see some photos toward the end of the week — a woman at table 8 by the stage held up a napkin.

Tom walked over to her and picked up the piece of paper. “Is this for me?” he asked sounding as he always does in this situation — slightly surprised as if someone actually would put something onstage for anyone else.

At any rate the note from the fan asked Tom to autograph her shoulder so she could get the signature tattooed. He said to the audience, “A shoulder? I’ve had them here (indicating the general vicinity of his abdomen), but never on a shoulder.” (Of course many of us have met the Australian fan who had his signature on her ankle permanently tattooed.)

Then, when he sang Pussycat, a fan from Florida who visits Las Vegas to see Tom barraged the stage with a dozen or so stuffed cats of every variety, as she does every night she’s here and as you can easily see in the photo at left. Tom gazed at the collection and spoke:

“I haven’t seen this much — um — since back in, I think it was 1974. But I was younger then. You know, when Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote this song, they never envisioned this happening. They wrote it for a Woody Allen comedy that had nothing to do with pussy…Or cats.”

Later, my friend the valet told me of two women who’d seen the show a night or two before when this fan — as fans (as we all do) tend to be repetitive when they think something works — also did the pussy toss. “They told me Tom’s show was dirty,” he said. “Was it?” I said, “No, it was adult and funny. As Joan Rivers said in a recent interview,* “If it’s funny it ain’t dirty. Just laugh and calm down.”

Tonight there were several references to days gone by. The one just above is an example. Tom also talked about recording It’s Not Unusual in 1964 and Green Grass of Home in 1966. Maybe he’s — again borrowing from my interview with Joan Rivers — reflecting on a very good life but, as he said about aging, “if you stop the clock there’s no future.” So, clearly, he’s also looking forward to a future. Certainly a nice place to be, don’t you agree?

Anyway, the show was gobs of fun and, from a personal perspective, it was terrific sharing it with friends and fans from the east coast, west coast, the UK and France. It is one of the best things about doing this site.

(*Sorry, had to put the plug in. It’s my nature as writer and PR person.)
