Tom Jones & The Gang This Weekend: Over The Mountains, Across The Pond, To Merrie Old England They Go

The world of Tom Jones may span many thousands of miles but it’s not really that large.

Thus it is that we heard from a friend in Europe who knows someone who……well, you get the idea.

What we heard is that Tom and the gang are all headed to the UK today to play a wedding in England this weekend. Then, back to the USA on Monday (at least, we think, for most of them).

This got us thinking — after we tried to imagine what it would take to have Tom Jones play your wedding — that, if either of us were to have another wedding and could have Tom entertain there, the one song we’d want him to play — and we’ve posted a few seconds here — is the Anniversary Song.

He always cites Al Jolson as one of his earliest influences and this was a Jolson standard. Tom recorded it on the album Say You’ll Stay Until Tomorrow in 1977. Today it is still breathtaking in it’s eloquent, quiet beauty.

These photos were taken of Tom performing in 1977. If you look real close you can see the then-common glam make-up.

I’m in the planning stages now for my wedding next August and I would definitely have Tom play there if it were possible. I don’t know if my fiance would like that too much, but I would have to assert my veto power over her objections :)

If ever I hit the jackpot in Vegas I’ve always said I’d hire Tom for a private gig…even if I had to get married again! lol What about the Hawaiian wedding song Elvis sang for a suggestion? I think Tom would do a wonderful job with it.

When, and if, I finally do meet that Special person, he would have to be the all-around, caring, sharing, soul-supporting and loving human being, and who would be able to appreciate Tom Jones and his music enough to have the song, I’ll (Gonna) Never Fall in Love, Again be our wedding song. It also happens to be my all-time favorite, aside from Tom’s other beauty, Can’t Stop Loving You. BUT, the ways guys are turning out to be, lately, I would rather remain single until the right one comes around. Hey, my arthritis may kick in by then, at least, I’ll still find enough balance to sway to Tom’s very slow ballads.

If I were to marry again, not only would he be my number one guest, he could also sing whatever he likes throughtout the wedding, I might even consider taking him on honeymoon, to sing of course.Ha! Ha!.

  6. Laura W Says:

Do you know who’s wedding it is for? Maybe we could all chip in and pay for a private concert. LOL,at least then we would all be respectful when he sang and didn’t throw things on stage. We would dance and sing along when he asked for audience particapation. Doesn’t that sound like fun?

I have the DVD of The Al Jolson Story and I got it primarily for the Anniversary Song! It’s one of my favorites. Laura W. what a great idea – you can count me in!!

  8. Barb S. Says:

Laura W., you can count on me too. I’m not interested in getting married again, but a private concert by Tom would be fabulous!

If tom sang at my wedding I would cancel the wedding.and listen and look at tom . hahaha sshhh dont tell my husband I said that.

Laura W. I agree with your idea getting together and having a special concert and having Tom as the very special performer. No matter what he would sing I would be in Heaven. I was in heaven last week at his last three shows in Las Vegas!!!!
