February Question of the Month: One Love Song?

ponty 2006Because this is the official month of romance — what with Valentine’s Day and all — we’d like to know:

What is the one (1) single, love song you’d like to hear Tom sing?

It can be one he’s recorded and/or performed, or one he hasn’t. Doesn’t matter. Just tell us one, please.

And, if you believe your one song requires an explanation of why you chose it, please let us know that, too.

We know choosing just one song is difficult, but it’s a fun challenge. So, please, let’s try to keep it to one song — one response — per person.

  1. Martine Says:

Mine would be “My Yiddish Mamma” which is a love song to a mother and When Tom sings it, especially “a capella”
you can feel the whole power of his love through the tremendous power of his voice. Maybe it is because he worshipped his own mother.

  2. Gill s.wales Says:

As you say, it’s impossible to choose one song but I love I (Who Have Nothing) because I think Tom must have felt this way before he was famous. This is one of his songs that will be played at my funeral.

  3. Holly Says:

Only Once. It has been my all-time favorite since the moment I heard it!

  4. BeBe Says:

LOVE LETTERS is my choice because I love TOM singing this song “straight from his heart.”

  5. Felicia Says:

    Only Once

  6. Betti Says:

One Minute of Your Time. It’s the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard. Tom sings it perfectly and puts all emotions into it.

  7. Chris Says:

No Question it’s I’ll Never Fall in Love Again. Puts me in a heart-pounding trance! Only Tom can sing it like it needs to be sung.

  8. Mary P Says:

Yes!!! Only Once has always been my favorite, too. How about Once There Was A Time? Another oldie but goodie??

  9. The Flash Says:

How Do You Say Goodbye, If You Go Away and Us are certainly a few of my favorite songs. But the definitive Tom Jones love song for me is If I Sing You A Love Song.

  10. jorge Says:

Tom tiene muchas canciones de amor. Elegir una es muy dificil pero me quedo con With These Hands.

Tom has many love songs. Choosing one is very difficult, but I’ll stick with With These Hands.

  11. The Flash Says:

Yeah, With These Hands has some nice memories for us too….as some of you may know.

  12. Laura Says:

Everlasting Love…first recorded and written by Robert Knight. Later recorded by Carl Carlton. I love this song.

  13. Moderator Says:

Moderator’s Note: The Flash is referring to his wedding when someone sang With These Hands to him and his bride.

  14. katherine k Says:

I’ll Never Fall in Love Again is my favourite love song by Tom — so much feeling like no one else. Both me and my hubby love it. —Katherine

  15. SusannePDX Says:

It has to be I WHO HAVE NOTHING, I who am no one, adore you and want you soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. ;-)

  16. Dana Says:

Mark Knopfler & Tom Jones, Feel Like Going Home. Can be seen on youtube.com

  17. Audrey M Says:

I once saw a clip of the concert portion of TITJ when he performed Otis Redding’s I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now), and for me it was one of those TJ moments that literally takes you breath. I would love to hear him do it live.

  18. Cathy Says:

I am having a hard time deciding between With These Hands and I’ll Never Fall in Love Again. On the one hand, I have to say that I’ll Never Fall is a very sad love song and With These Hands is a love-affirming song but I would say the one I prefer to hear and the one I get wrapped up in is I’ll Never Fall in Love Again. When Tom sings this song I still ache for his loss. I know that sounds corny, but that’s how I feel.:-)

  19. Lori R. Says:

Elvis’s song, It’s Midnight. With Tom’s big voice,I would love to hear him sing, “It’s midnight and I miss you!” Gives me the chills.

  20. cindy Says:

    Love Me Tonight.

  21. monica j. Says:

I think the name of the song is Sign Your Name Across My Heart? Tom had it in his show one year.

Moderators’ Note: Monica is referring to Tom’s beautiful version of the Terence Trent D’Arby song.

  22. totally obssessed Says:

    I (Who Have Nothing)

  23. Jim A. Says:

I (Who Have Nothing). While many artists have covered this song, TJ is the only one who interprets it with the power, emotion and conviction it deserves.

  24. Carol Says:

    Lady Lay Down — WHOA!!

  25. Eunice Says:

Maybe not exactly a love song, but Memory from Cats was my all time favorite. Tom’s rendition was perhaps one of the most beautiful performances I have ever seen him do.

  26. Pam Says:

I have so many favorites, but I guess if I have to stick to one it would be I‘ll Never Fall In Love Again. It’s one of his classic songs and is GREAT!

  27. Dre Says:

    The Reason (2007)

  28. melinda Says:

I think the old song At Last would work just fine.

  29. Fay Says:

I’d love to hear Tom sing either Baby Now That I’ve Found You by the Foundations, or, Ella Fitzgeralds’ Dream a Little Dream of Me, or, both ; ))) I would love TJ to be my Valentine.

  30. Fay Says:

P.S. Ian’s is the first suggestion, above, mine is the second…. lol

  31. Dorothy Jean C. Says:

I juat love the song Tom does with Jeff Beck on youtube.com, Love Letters. Tom puts so much emotion in this song that this is just one of the songs I would love to see him sing. Thanks.

  32. Mika Says:

I love Tom’s take on the song Ebb Tide. I’d like him to sing that live!

  33. Oqi Says:

I‘ll Never Fall In Love Again is great but I also love Tom’s version of You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling and I think it’s also the best version of the song.. That’s just so great

“You never close your eyes anymore when I kiss your lips…” =(

  34. Darla Says:

Like everyone else, it’s so difficult to choose. The one that stopped me dead in my tracks and made me cry is, I (Who Have Nothing). My second favorite is I’m Coming Home. One song that’s kind of a happy love song is Help Yourself. That one makes me want to strut, lol. Who am I kiddin’? There isn’t a song that Tom sings that doesn’t evoke some kind of emotion.

  35. elaine Says:

I love all his songs but I would like to hear him sing Ooh Baby Baby originally sang by Smokey Robinson. I think TJ could bring the house down if he sang that song the way only he could. I think I would melt.

  36. marisa Says:

Sexual Healing (as Tina Turner said…”What’s love got to do with it?”)

  37. Deborah Says:

I really like With These Hands. I only discovered this song a couple of years ago when I purchased Tom’s “Reloaded” album. I thought that I knew most of his songs, but this one really surprised me. I tell you what else has amazed me through the past few years, Tom has a soon-to-be 51 year old son! I am the same age as Mark. My parents were born in the 1920′s!

  38. Paula Says:

A challenge indeed….I’m struggling to get it down to 10, let alone just one. Would have to agree with most of the above but I do love At This Moment and I’ve always wanted to hear Tom sing Roy Orbison’s Crying.

  39. Beth Says:

I have so many favorites. However, one of my all time favorites is with Tom and Lynda Carter singing With You I’m Born Again. When I listen to it, I get a little warm and fuzzy!

  40. Patricia Says:

Hola, soy Patricia de Argentina. Mi canción de amor favorita es Till. Tom la canta con mucha emoción y fuerza

Hello, I am Patricia from Argentina. My favorite love song is Till.Tom sings it with so much emotion and force.

  41. MARGARET Says:

I have a few favorites, including I (Who Have Nothing). Does everybody remember I Can’t Stop Loving You and Till? Great Songs. Does this site have any influence on what Tom’s new set list will be? Just curious.

  42. Ed Says:

Wow! this is a tough one. As someone stated earlier it is hard because Tom sings everything without comparison. I see I (Who Have Nothing) on here as well as Till and I’ll Never Fall In Love Again plus one many seem to never list, I’m Coming Home — all my favorites. One song seems to have been forgotten, Without Love. This is truly Tom’s song and I don’t ever remember anyone else trying to sing this song.

  43. Debbie Says:

The Rose from his first hit CD. But all are great.

  44. Moderator Says:

Margaret: Except for the fact that we know people who work with Tom do see our site, we’re not going to claim influence. We heard on the grapevine that there were some rehearsals while they were all at the MGM this time, but nothing new has been added to the show yet. Although, maybe, when they begin to tour a week from tomorrow there will be.

Ed: For the record, although we do love Tom’s version of it, Clyde McPhatter (of the original Drifters) had the first hit on Without Love.

  45. mharding Says:

Elvis also did a version of Without Love on one of his albums.

  46. Moderator Says:

mharding: Not to make too fine a point of it, but here in the US, the only two versions that charted were by Clyde McPhatter and Tom. Lots of people did the song, but it is to this day associated with these two performers. In fact, when a close friend of McPhatter’s met Tom and asked if Tom knew who did the song originally, he quickly responded, “Of course. It was Clyde McPhatter’s song.”

  47. Moderator Says:

    Hi, All:

Like so many of you, we found it difficult to narrow down the choice to just one song. Ursula agrees with Mary about I’ve Been Loving You Too Long. Ellen likes Love Letters and one from the Jools Holland CD, Baptism By Fire. Tom briefly performed these songs in 2006. They were beautiful.

Tom does Ursula’s very favorite, I’ll Never Fall In Love Again and she recalls Touch Me with great fondness. Ellen invites you to listen to Gary Morris’ version of The Wind Beneath My Wings. It lacks the schmaltz of Bette’s overwrought version and, in its quiet way, is a terrific love song, especially when sung by someone who has achieved a great deal. Just listen and imagine Tom singing it. (And Ellen doesn’t even particularly like the song but heard Morris’ version on the radio and came to believe it would have great meaning with Tom doing it.)

As for favorites, Ursula’s is above and Ellen cannot make up her mind.

    —Ellen & Ursula

  48. Ed Says:

Just read a few more of the song comments and wanted to say you are always on the top of things when you informed me of who originally sang Without Love. I forgot to add I have always wanted to hear Tom sing Show And Tell.

  49. Sandy Says:

If. Don’t know when it was originally recorded but it is on the 3rd CD of the Definitive album. Go sit in a quiet room & listen to this song. It is absolutely beautiful.

  50. Dre Says:

Pledging My Love is the ultimate love song, I think. Just search for it on youtube and you will know what I mean.

  51. Denise Lewis Says:

I just listened to Pledging My Love on the way home tonight and I thought to myself, “that’s it.” But if I could pick one that he hasn’t recorded (or at least I think he hasn’t recorded it) it would have to be Unchained Melody. Just about the most beautiful love song ever written sung by that gorgeous voice. WOW — enough to give me goosebumps!

  52. massantonio Says:

Depende tu estado de ánimo hay para todos los dias me quedo hoy con I Won’t Be Sorry To See Suzanne Again.

As near as we can translate, Massantonio writes that the song depends on your spirits on any given day. Today the favorite is I Won’t Be Sorry To See Suzanne Again.

  53. Sandy Says:

Denise, I have a recording of Unchained Melody on a 3-CD set called The Sensational Tom Jones in Performance. Bought it at my local music store a few years ago. Says it was made in England. You’re right, it is beautiful, especially with Tom singing it.

  54. Moderator Says:

Denise, Sandy: Sandy is referring to a set of recordings taken from the Coast to Coast Canadian series. The song was never — as far as we can tell — officially “recorded” and that CD set wasn’t released with any sanction from Tom and/or his management.

  55. Deb Says:

It would have to be I’ll Never Fall in Love Again, although, if Tom was willing to sing me a couple more love songs, I would ask for Without Love and Heaven’s Been a Long Time Comin’.

  56. flora Says:

My song is Love me Tonight. Flo

  57. Stewart Says:

My choice is a song I remember him singing on the TITJ series. The song is “Softly, as I leave you”. A beautiful song that showed the mellow side of Tom. He sang it with incredible feeling and sensitivity. It was perfect. I hope they include it on some future DVD release.

  58. Ana Gomez Says:

As you say, it is very difficult to chose one song, but for me “I WILL NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN” is the one. He sings it with so much “passion” that everytime I hear all my body shakes. In his shows in Las Vegas he always sings this song and is incredible feeling it in person.

  59. pat lowndes Says:

It would have to be “MY FUNNY VALENTINE”.find a quiet place ,close your eyes and listen and imagine tom is singing just for you …heaven !!!!! better go quick before i think of another favorite tom song.

  60. maggie Says:

there is a song on stevie wonders innervision cd i believe its called all in love is fair i would love, love to hear sir tom sing this i know if he did he would own it , this song is made for him i can hear him sing it with his beautiful voice, i woiuld love to meet tom one day and tell him about this song i really beleive it was written for him.

  61. linda parker Says:

My favorite is Heaven’s Been A Long Time Coming. There are a couple of excellent clips of Tom singing this song on youtube.

  62. Judy Says:

I just love Tom singing..Let It Be Me (Everly Bros.) and In Dreams (Roy Orbison). Hard to pick only one favorite love song. Also love You’re My World and That Wonderful Sound.

  63. Dragonlady Says:

Took me a while to find one. But I would like to hear Tom do L.O.V.E by Nat King Cole, I’m sure it would sound great. Of course I adore the original version too.

  64. Julia Says:

Baby Blues (by Barry White)……. So Sexy Tom would make this smokin’ hot……..

  65. Bob Says:

Memory from Cats gave me goosebumps when he did it in concert.
