Sorry We’re Late, But Here’s Our September Question of the Month

We’ve all been busy, so we do apologize for our tardiness in posting this question which, in truth, was prepared over one month ago.

westbury 5-22-81The Question of the Month for September is:

What is your favorite quote from Tom Jones?

Over the years we’ve heard Tom talk about living in “Dean Martin’s house.” We’ve heard him welcome the “ladies. And thank you gentlemen for bringing them here.” “The memory is the second thing to go. I can’t remember the first.”

Yes, there are lots and lots of quotes he’s said onstage. But, now, we’re asking for other quotes that you may have read or heard in interviews.

Below are a few of our favorites. We’d like you to add yours. And the more obscure, the better.

“As for the music business itself, the key things have not changed that much. It operates like any business and money still keeps things moving.”

“I have had some pretty wild nights! I think the media keeps a very close eye on what people are up to these days. I was out with George Clooney a few nights ago and we had a great time.”

“I like to drink to suit my location.”

“I love listening to new stuff. At home in LA I always have the radio on to hear what is happening.”

“I’ve always worn jewelry but for a time it went out of fashion. Like grungy and punk bands didn’t wear jewelry because it was stupid.”

“There’s plenty for me to do. There are more albums. I’ll record as long as I can and as long as my voice works as well as it does now and for as long as people want to hear me.”

“Winning the Outstanding Contribution award is great, because you know you have won in advance. Previously, I have been really nervous during the ceremony because you have no idea if you are going to get called up on stage. This time I could relax and enjoy myself.”

“Let’s not complain about why things don’t work. Let’s see if we can come up with something that we can all get behind.”

“I always feel a bit guilty when Catherine Zeta-Jones talks to me and I can’t converse with her in Welsh.”

  1. Renn Says:

“You can’t be a sexy person unless you have something sexy to offer. With me, it’s my voice: the way that I sing, the way I express myself when I sing.”

  2. Martine Says:

As we are in the world cup of rugby period, here is a quote that Tom once said about rugby and football matches :
“I don’t mind about who wins as far as it is Wales ”
    I simply love !!!

  3. Johan Says:

The thing he always does when he comes to Holland: “It’s great to be back….once again…in the Netherlands…Rotterdam..yessssss”. We always say it before he does and have a great laugh about it.

Also the hilarious comment he did on his ‘new’ album The 10th Anniversary: “…and this year’s album is about the finest motherf*****…I’m sorry…I got carried away.” Just take a look at the clip. Very funny.

  4. mharding Says:

“There’s never been a singer as good as me and there probably never will be. There’s never been anyone as versatile…except maybe Elvis Presley and he nicked half his Vegas act off me.”

  5. mharding Says:

“Mick Jagger can’t sing Fly me to the Moon and Sinatra can’t sing Satisfaction but I can do both”.

  6. mharding Says:

When asked why he had changed the lyrics to Prince’s Kiss from “Women not girls rule my world” to “Women and girls rule my world”…

“I didn’t want to leave anybody out.”

  7. mharding Says:

A radio dj asked Tom if he had ever witnessed Elvis shooting television sets. Tom admitted that he had. The dj probed further as to the reason for Elvis’ behaviour and Tom replied “I think it was before remote control”.

  8. Dana Says:

Oh! That’s funny!! I nearly fell out of my seat laughing…”I think it was before remote control.” What a hoot! GREAT reply.

  9. Moderator Says:

OK, we’ve gotta say this: Now change “You don’t have 2 watch Dynasty 2 have an attitude,” to something else. Prince himself has substituted Desperate Housewives. As for his rendering of Satisfaction, there might be some disagreement on his version. Just like some of Tom’s songs, some things are best left to the original singer.

  10. Darla Says:

On his DVD,This Is Tom Jones, Tom just finished singing a song and was dancing up a storm. At the end of the song he was sweating as only Tom can, and undid his bow tie, stating, “It sure is hot in here.” One of the women screamed, “Throw it to me.” Tom said, Oh I can’t love,” and then with a mischievous grin added, “I only have one and I have to take care of it.” The women caught the innuendo and started screaming. I LOVED that moment!

  11. Marian Says:

Most famous and poignant quote at the ending of the video, Live At This Moment, Tom said he wanted to be remembered for his voice. I think that says it all for Sir Tom that, aside from his looks, sexiness, and all his other attributes, he wants the world to remember him with “respect” for his Voice.

M.Harding, Are all those quotes for real??? Loved it!! LOL

  12. Laura C Says:

My favorite quote is one I heard Tom say personally at a show at the MGM…”Someone get me a shovel, so I can keep digging myself in deeper.” He had started with a joke and it continued to go sideways. It was hysterical!!!

  13. pat lowndes Says:

I can’t remember what show it was on but an earliy one Tom said a woman is a woman but a cigar is a good smoke…guess he should know as he is smokin .and I don’t mean cigars

  14. Julia Says:

    Being Married keeps me single

  15. mharding Says:

    Hi Marian,
Yes, the quotes I put up are real. I had a feeling they might look made up but they are real!

  16. Laura C Says:

This photo of Tom should be posted in the dictionary above the word “symmetry”. My, my.

  17. Marian Says:

Thanks, mharding, I thought it was more of your own humor, which we all enjoy. LOL I think you must have a long history seeing Tom. How far back in Tom’s career can you recall seeing him… back to the 70′s, at least?

  18. Marisa Says:

“To live for today and to love for tomorrow, is the wisdom of a fool because tomorrow is promised to no one.”

    Words to live by daily.
