Tom Jones + Luciano Pavarotti = One Amazing “Delilah”

modena 2001When Luciano Pavarotti died Wednesday, the music world suffered a great loss. A towering figure (literally and figuratively) Pavarotti simply defined opera to many people. He was also a great humanitarian.

On May 29, 2001, Tom appeared at Pavarotti’s annual charity concert in his hometown of Modena, Italy. The beneficiaries that year were Afghani refugees. Also on that bill were George Benson, Celia Cruz, Anastacia and Barry White. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas also made appearances.

Watch Tom’s face in this video clip of him with Pavarotti singing Delilah. It, like this photo, isn’t great quality, but you get the point.

And, again, you can revisit the CNN interview with Tom when the reporter asks about a Pavarotti duet on Sexbomb.

One other youtube gem worth noting is from the 2002 Modena benefit. Here is the Pavarotti-James Brown duet of It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World.

It is always with admiration watching Sir Tom interact with his duetting partners. He shows a respectful deference to all of them from “way back” when he had his guest stars on his TV shows. He has to know he is the best, but still exhibits such a sweet humility with anyone he sings with. Showing this same respect, as seen with the great, late Pavarotti, he was performing with an equal. A great performance if I ever saw one!!!!!!!

That was a welcome performance on YouTube…thanks to the moderators for the links. I was trying to find that “laughing, chuckling one” yesterday.

Now that I have watched James Brown with Pavarotti, I should add that is two late greats!!! A sad realization they are both gone, but what a treasure to be able to watch their performances on YouTube, and still appreciate their great talents.

What a wonderful video! The children singing is just a fabulous touch. I wish I’d been in that crowd ; ))

Its so great to hear two powerful voices together. I’ve also said TJ could sing anything. This clip shows he could even do opera if he wanted.

  7. Darla Says:

OK, I have died and gone to Heaven!! My two favorite singers in the whole world doing a duet. THUD and triple THUD!
I love Pavarotti, but between you and me, I think that Sir Tom had the more powerful voice. Still, it was such beautiful muscc!

Thank you so very much for sharing that amazing piece of musical history!! I was aware that Sir Tom and Pavarotti had sang Delilah together, but I have never had the opportunity until now to see it. In the beginning of Tom’s career, his voice coach (also an opera singer) wanted Tom to use his gift to sing opera. As we are all aware Tom chose a different avenue. He is very capable of singing anything as he has proven to the world over and over again. I was deeply saddened by the loss of such a great talent. That piece was absolutely beautiful!!! Thanks again it was a privelege to witness to great talents come together and make history!! He and his beautiful gift shall live on forever. Many thanks!!! Michele.

Realmente fantástico. Tom Jones jamás decepciona y tampoco desentona, y más pensando que está al lado de uno de los tenores más brillantes de la historia de la música. Me gustaría conservar esta filmación de ambos. ¿Puedo hacerlo?
